What's a 49mm tamper for?

You use a 49mm tamper in two cases: if you have a La Pavoni espresso machine from before 2000, or if you want to start experimenting with a step-down filter basket.

A step-down basket has an outer diameter of 58mm, but an inner diameter of 49mm. You use coarser ground beans in it to bring out different flavours from your espresso beans.

Because a step-down filter basket is narrower and deeper than a regular filter basket, you need a different tamper for it: one with a 49mm diameter. And because we are here for every home barista, you can now find that tamper with us.
